On a hot, rough Wednesday afternoon, the greens not in-so-perfect condition, Willet Kalonga rose above all the adversity to count out Welkam Phiri on 19 points and win the Supa Fit Ball Pool played at Blantyre Sports Club.
Playing off handicap 13, Kalonga had a tough day on the course as he usually strayed from the fair-way, but in his own words, he got it right on the last hole.
“I had 17 points as I approached the last hole. My target was to get three more points to win the tournament, but that did not happen. I usually play well and today’s win was a bonus. There was no much difference between me and Welkam. It was a hard day to play golf because the greens were not in good condition,” he said.
Sam Mwale finished third after counting out John Mhango on 18 points.
This first Ball Pool of 2016 attracted 52 golfers, but only three ladies participated. Harriet Mariani won the ladies’ division after posting 14 points with a handicap of 36.
Eighteenth-handicap Teri Amaro was second with a score of 10 points.
In the subsidiary prizes, Chimwemwe Chimwaza won a combined longest drive on hole 17.
Supa Fit donated two tyres for one of the tractors at the club to assist in maintenance of the greens.
The company’s chief executive officer, Kassim Aroni, said the company was committed to sponsoring more golf tournaments.
“These tournaments give us an opportunity to interact with our customers, most of whom need automobile services. We share ideas as we play the game. As a golfer, I pledge continued support to the sport. We should soon sponsor an 18- hole tournament here in Blantyre,” he said.
Aroni said their immediate plans were to hold another tournament at Country Club Limbe before returning to Blantyre with a bigger tournament.
