Complex Tigresses, Kukoma Diamonds’ dominance at stake

by

carol-bapuPresidential national netball trophy finals throwoff at Blantyre Youth Centre Thursday morning with some teams eager to end Complex Tigresses and Kukoma Diamonds dominance in the competition.

Since the inception of the trophy in 2009, Tigresses and Diamonds have won it three times each.

Tigresses won the inaugural competition in 2009 followed, in 2010 and 2011, by Diamonds, who were then known as Escom Sisters.

Tigresses reclaimed the trophy in 2012 before surrendering it to Diamonds in 2013. Tigresses bounced back and won the trophy in 2014.

Blue Eagles Sisters coach, Sam Kanyenda, said records are meant to be broken.

“The fact that they have won the competition three times each is enough to motivate us to end their dominance. We will fight to win our first national title in over two decades,” Kanyenda said.

Tigresses coach, Peace Chawinga-Kaluwa, said they had rectified mistakes that contributed to their failure to retain the GOtv Netball Champions League recently.

“We are not worried because we know what went wrong and we have since corrected the errors,” Kaluwa said.

Diamonds assistant, coach, Noel Mussa, said they will work hard to win their second title this season, having lifted the GOtv Netball Champions League.

“We have to win to impress our new sponsor,” he said.

As we went to press, Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) was expected to conduct a draw.

Tigresses, Diamonds, Thunder Queens, Blue Eagles Sisters, Civonets, Mafco Sisters, Lameck Queens, Mimosa Queens, Alliance Capital Stars, Prison Queens, Green Eagles and Young Sisters will compete in the finals.

Nam general secretary, Carol Bapu, said before the competition gets underway, stakeholders would meet to refresh on rules and regulations the competition is using to avoid confusion.

The national champions will get K4 million with the runners-up pocketing K2 million while the third-placed side will pocket K1 million
