Malawi netball Queens assistant coach, Mary Waya, has finally cut ties with Thunder Queens (formerly MTL Queens) after picking a coaching job at blossoming Southern Region side, Alliance Capital Stars.
Alliance Capital announced the deal early December, but Waya was elusive when contacted.
Waya reported for work at Alliance Capital Stars at Blantyre Youth Centre on Monday when the team regrouped for the forthcoming Presidential national netball trophy’s preparations.
Alliance Capital Stars chairperson, Dalitso Chinyama, was reluctant to confirm Waya’s hiring.
“Of course, we have a new coach. I don’t think that you will be surprised if you find Mary at our training,” she said.
However, Thunder players had been spotted training without a coach’s supervision in the past two days.
Thunders senior players, Joanna Kachilika and Esther Kayira said they were not bothered by Waya’s absence.
“Of course, the coach hasn’t been reporting for training for some time and we are used to it. Speculation is rife that the coach has moved to another team. We are determined to fight for our positions with or without her,” Kachilika said.
The move ends’ Waya’s long-term relation with Thunder spanning over two decades, which saw her donning the club’s colours under different sponsorships, including Malawi Telecommunications Limited, Malawi Broadcasting Corporation and Malawi Posts Corporation.
Waya started playing international-level netball at 14, and has represented Malawi in some 200 games.
