Reverend Father Inspector Clement Matewere, who was serving under the Spiritual Branch at the National Police Headquarters, has been transferred to Bulala Police Unit in Mzimba for offering a prayer that spoke against ills bedeviling the service, The Daily Times has learnt.
According to sources, the prayer, which was delivered in Chichewa, talked against nepotism, tribalism and corruption among other vices used in promoting officers in the service.
The prayer said“promotion kutengera kudziwana, kutengera zibale, kudziwana ndi makolo, kugwirira ntchito limodzi malo amodzi, ndikuphwanya zonsezi mudzina la Yesu [Promotion based on nepotism, tribalism or based on the fact that you work together, I denounce this in Jesus name!]
According to a source at the Police Headquarters, the prayer was made towards midnight after dining during last New Year’s Ball at the Senior Officers Mess at National Police Headquarters.
National Police Spokesperson, Nicholas Gondwa, while confirming the transfer of Inspector Matewere, described it as normal and a timely intervention to beef up the security team in the northern region.
“During the festive season, there was a team of senior police officers that was deployed across the country to assess security issues, and one thing that came out clearly is that most police units in the North lacked staff. Inspector Matewere is one of the officers tasked to provide public safety around Bulala community in Mzimba as the Officer-in-Charge and will continue to serve the Lord there.
“As law enforcers, we are not specialised people as consultants do. We can be transferred anywhere and anytime at the discretion of the authorities. The management can even transfer me as the PRO to work as any other police officer, just like what happened to [Davie] Chingwalu and Madam [Rhoda] Manjolo who are serving as Assistant Officer-in-Charge and Officer-in- Charge for Zomba and Ntcheu districts, respectively,” said Gondwa.
Inspector Matewere could not be reached on his mobile number.
