Trouble in Silver Strikers camp

Silver Strikers senior players have revolted against the club’s chairperson, Oscar Mabulekesi, claiming he lacks interest in the game.

Mabulekesi was elevated to the position after Macdonald Mafuta-Mwale stepped down last year, due to work commitments.

Now, a group of senior Silver players have threatened to leave the club if Mabulekesi remains the chairperson.

The players confided in The Daily Times on Tuesday that they want Mwale back at the helm of the club. Mafuta-Mwale is one of the club’s board members.

“He doesn’t have interest in football and he doesn’t care about the welfare of the players. There was a time when players went some months without pay. We called him, but he clearly told us that he is not interested in the issue. We don’t want him. Just imagine, he doesn’t know some of his players,” one of the players explained.

“If he stays as the chairperson of the club there will be total confusion at Silver when the season starts. Most of the players are now thinking of not renewing contracts under his leadership.”

Another senior player claimed that the club owes them game bonuses amounting to K80, 000 per player.

Mabulekesi yesterday dismissed the players’ claims, saying he is doing business unusual.

“I know some players want to get special treatment from the officials, but I treat all the players equally. If they are not happy let them go. Some new players will come,” Mabulekesi said.

The Bankers boss also confirmed that the club would embark on a serious rebuilding exercise next season.

Silver endured a difficult campaign in the 2015 when they finished on position five with 44 points in the TNM Super League. Silver ended the season empty-handed as they also failed to defend the Standard Bank Knock-Out Cup.
