At least 6,000 people are reported to have applied for the post of Customs Revenue Officer which Malawi Revenue Authority has since described as bogus.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the tax collector has since warned people in the country against taking the bogus vacancy announcement seriously.
The advertisement, which has been circulating on the social media, stipulated that the Authority was looking for people to fill the post of a Customs Revenue Officer.
And according to sources, MRA has so far received about 6,000 application letters as a result of the bogus vacancy.
But the statement dismissed the announcement, describing it as bogus.
“The Authority would like to distance itself from the malicious publication or the circulation of the bogus vacancy. The public is, therefore, informed that there is no vacancy for the position of a Customs Revenue Officer,” reads part of the statement signed by Commissioner General, Tom Gray Malata.
“As an organisation, we always publish official adverts, including those for vacancies, on our official communication platforms and newspapers, as such, we wish to warn the public about the bogus vacancy announcement,” the statement adds.
According to the statement, the Authority is investigating those behind the false publication and once found the culprits will be brought to book.
But in an interview yesterday, MRA Deputy Director of Corporate Affairs, Steven Kapoloma, said the Authority has so far received over 2,000 application letters via normal surface mail, apart from numerous others sent electronically.
