Malawi’s first Fide-recognised Arbiter, Gilton Mkumbwa, is confident of earning an international badge to enable him qualify for an International Arbiter title.
Mkumbwa was speaking from Seychelles where he is handling the Africa Chess Championship spanning from December 26 to January 8.
“So far, the tournament has been smooth on my part.
I have managed to solve some tricky game situations neatly. I am sure that at the end of the championship, I will get an international norm that will enable me to apply for an international arbiter title,” he said.
Mkumbwa said an international arbiter title would also boost Malawi’s chess profile.
“This can also help Malawi’s chess to develop because I will be handling games in an advanced way,” he said.
Mkumbwa became a Fide arbiter in 2007, since then he has arbitrated games in over four countries, the latest being Zambia during the recent African Senior Chess Championship.
