Malawi government says it is geared to see the energy policy currently under review, being launched by end of December this year.
The policy is under review to, among other things, bring the private sector into the power generation, distribution and transmission.
Deputy director for energy Joseph Kalowekamo said all things being equal, there is hope that the five-year plan will be ready for Cabinet nod by end of this year.
“We are on track, we are now at a stage where our consultant has already submitted his recommendations,” he said.
Among other, the consultant’s recommendations report contains a policy statement, subject for agreement between the government and other relevant stakeholders in the energy sector.
Once a draft policy is prepared, it will be taken out to various other stakeholders for an insight through regional consultations.
According to Kalowekamo, the regional consultations are scheduled for end November.
“A step that may remain in the process is taking the policy to Cabinet for a nod. But by end of December, we should have the policy ready,” said Kalowekamo.
