Agnes Mtimaukanena earns WBC rating

Malawi’s top female pugilist, Agnes Mtimaukanena-Mwando, is now eligible for a World Boxing Council (WBC) silver title fight after earning a top rating.

The Malawian is now expected to face Zambian, Lorita Muzeya, in a WBC silver title fight in Zambia on a date to be announced, thanks to Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board’s (MPBCB) intervention.

MPBCB president, Lonzoe Zimba, took advantage of the ongoing 53rd WBC annual convention in Kunming City in China to convince the world boxing body on the Malawian boxer’s rating.

Zimba, in a telephone interview yesterday, said WBC president, Maurico Suleman, and the rest of the delegates agreed to grant Mtimaukanena a WBC rating.

“I convinced them that Agnes deserves a WBC rating and they accepted. Fortunately, our colleagues of Zambia Oriental Boxing Quarries were present and they agreed to set a fight against Muzeya. Other details concerning the fight would be released later,” he said.

Mtimaukanena said facing the Zambian was a great opportunity, which she cannot reject.

“I cannot say no to such a great opportunity. I am sure my promoters and manager will welcome the development,” she said.

Mtimaukanena’s new manager, Hassam Mitha, said they would discuss before picking the offer.

“But, it sounds appetising. I don’t think that we will turn it down,” he said.

Mtimaukanena’s international career looked gloomy after the World Boxing Forum revoked the welterweight belt two years ago.

However, since returning from maternity break, Mtimaukanena has recorded victories to improve her record to seven wins, two defeats and two draws.
