Big Bullets and Flames left-back, Yamikani Fodya, has revealed that he wants to break a record by competing with the strikers in chasing the TNM Super League Golden Boot Award.
Fodya scored with his fourth free-kick on Saturday when Bullets beat Mafco 1-0 at Chitowe Stadium in Dwangwa where the sponsors, TNM and the Super League of Malawi (Sulom) re-launched the league’s second round.
Fodya’s goal helped the People’s Team open a nine point gap from their archrivals, Be Forward Wanderers, who lost 1-0 to Lilongwe sleeping giants, Civo United.
Innocent Bokosi of Red Lions is the leadig scorer with 10 followed by nine goals from Green Harawa of Silver Strikers.
Fodya, who was voted the league’s Best Defender in 2010, believes that he can be one of the contenders for the Golden Boot award.
“My Job is to stop strikers from scoring, but despite that I am also practising every day on scoring. I also scored through a free-kick when we played Civo,Dedza Young Soccer Stars and Silver Strikers in the first round,” Fodya said.
Defenders of the 1970s and 80 such as Young Chimodzi and Jack Chamangwana also used to weigh in their defensive duties with goals for club and country.
