Takondwa Lwazi: Malawi Queens silent assassin

by

Takondwa Lwazi is slowly becoming a household name in the country’ netball circles.

Although modern netball requires taller and giant players, Lwazi has defied all odds to become one of Malawi Queens’ star performers at the recently ended World Cup in Australia.

Malawi finished sixth after surrendering fifth spot to bitter rivals, South Africa.

She was excellent throughout the tournament despite her height. Lwazi is known for her speed and all-round athleticism as a centre court player.

Her exceptional talent and accurate passing make her the best centre court player in the country.

At 22, Lwazi is one of Malawi’s most exciting young netballers since her debut for Malawi Queens two years ago.

From a super-substitute for Queens, Lwazi has cemented her place in the team.

She has progressed through the ranks and is now the captain of Central Region netball giants, Blue Eagles Sisters.

At the Glassgow Commonwealth Games last year, one commentator mentioned Lwazi as one of the most talented netball players in Malawi.

She has been overshadowed by excellent netball players Mwawi Kumwenda, Caroline Ngwira and Sindi Simtowe, but Lwazi is not far from them.

On the local scene, she has done it on several occasions. Lwazi was voted as the best centre player of GOtv Netball Champions League last year.

In 2010, Lwazi was playing for a little known netball team in the Central Region, Mussa Queens, before joining Kamuzu Barracks, later she was spotted by Eagles in 2012.

But why her career has pressed a fast-forward button to become one of the most reliable Queens players in just two years.

The youngster believes that discipline and hard work were the keys for her success, adding that playing for the Queens was a dream come true.

“I always work hard because I have set myself targets as a netballer.

Nothing comes without hard work so I think if I continue working hard there are more good things in future for me,” she said.

Lwazi aims at becoming one of Malawi’s netball exports in the near future.

Kumwenda is the only Malawian netball player plying her trade abroad with Tactix of New Zealand.

Eagles Sisters assistant coach Madano Thepeteya also hailed Lwazi’s exploits.
