Moyo eyes K5m Russia marathon prize

Domestic  marathon king, Henry Moyo, is sweating it out in the terrains of Zomba Mountain while preparing to launch an assault on the 56 km Elton Ultra-Marathon in Russia this September 5.

“I have been training for seven months now. There is $10 000 (K 5.2 million) at stake for the champion and all athletes would be gunning for that. I have been invited following my participation in Two Ocean Marathon, whose organisers recommended my name,” Moyo said.

Moyo’s Two Oceans’ record is 3 hours 8 minutes he achieved after emerging as number two in 2013 in Cape Town, South Africa. He failed to surpass that record when finishing fourth last year.

The Zomba police officer has since sought permission from his employers, the Malawi Police Service, whose national sports coordinator, Stanley Mwalweni, confirmed the invitation to Russia.

“I forward the letter to the authorities for their green light to enable him travel. I am positive that he will be released as the trip to Russia is almost fully-funded,” Mwalweni said yesterday.

Moyo is a record four-time winner of the now defunct Nico/ Blantyre Marathon. He also won the Heroes Marathon and Kuala Lumpur Marathon in Malaysia some seven years ago. Top runners from other countries such as Lesotho, South Africa and Zimbabwe will also participate in the Russia race.
