New MTL internet package for SMEs

by

Telecommunications Limited (MTL) on Monday unveiled a cloud-computing package called Cumulus, which will help small and medium enterprises cut on data management expenses.

Cumulus was unveiled during the ongoing 27th Malawi International Trade Fair (MITF) which is being held under the theme, ‘Achieving Regional Integration Through Trade’.

Cumulus allows application software to be operated using internet-enabled devices.

The facility relies on sharing of resources to achieve coherence and economies of scale similar to a utility like the electricity grid over a network.

MTL Head of Marketing Chimwemwe Khonje said Cumulus has been developed in partnership with a technology company called 23rd Century Systems.

The package will help SMEs move away from the traditional model of buying dedicated hardware and depreciate it over a period of time to the Operating Expenditure (Opex) model of using a shared cloud infrastructure and pay as one uses it.

He s aid the company decided to target SMEs with Cumulus because MTL believes that the sector has potential to grow and propel the economy to greater heights if well supported.

“SMEs face a number of challenges to grow, including capital to buy computer equipment so as to manage data. Cumulus will help minimise those costs, thereby providing an opportunity to the SMEs to channel the little resources to other productive avenues,” said Khonje.

Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry Head of Membership and Communications Enid Mauluka hailed MTL for the product.

Mauluka said Cumulus is in line with this year’s trade fair, saying it would help Malawi achieve regional integration through trade.
