In order to deal with challenges of electricity outages and contribute towards a greener environment, mobile phone network operator TNM has turned to solar to power some of its base transmitter stations that used to run on diesel.
The transmitters are responsible for providing network coverage for customer’s mobile phones.
TNM Chief Operations Officer Eric Valentine said the switch to solar is helping the mobile operator save between 60 to 90 percent fuel usage per site to service transmitters which are not accessible by Escom power.
A total of nine transmitters have been switched to solar.
Valentine said the solar energy alternative is minimizing TNM’s carbon footprint by reducing on emissions and noise that is generated by the use of fossil fuels.
“Are are firm at advocating for environmental sustainability. Realising the carbon footprint that diesel generators create, we decided to invest and switch to smart power through solar energy,” he said.
He said with growth in both network and customer’s base, TNM network has been planned and implemented with the needs of community and the environment in mind.
