The guns have fallen silent. Soldiers must return to the barracks. Children can now come out to play without facing the danger of being caught up in the cross fire.
The war called TNM Super League has well and truly been fought among 16 teams since April when the first shot was fired to spark off the mother of all battles, which is set to run up to the end of the year.
At the halfway break, Nyasa Big Bullets are proudly at the summit of the log table with 35 points, having lost no match on the battlefield.
Bullets wrapped up their 15 battles on Saturday with a 1-0 win over Blue Eagles in Mulanje with all their reputation intact.
The People’s Team has all the positives required of worthy league leaders. In 15 matches, Bullets have the best goal difference of any team in the top flight league.
They scored 23 goals and conceded only four. This makes them the highest scoring and least conceding team in the league with a goal difference of 19.
Lying second on the table at 32 points, Silver are the only team that comes close to Bullets with a goal difference of 12. They scored two goals less and conceded five goals more than the leaders.
Bullets Coach Rodgers Yasini was modest about his achievements, saying his charges had lost points unnecessarily in matches they should have won.
“We created a lot of chances but we could not convert them all. For us to maintain our lead, we need to score as many goals as we can while conceding less. That is how league titles are won,” Yasini said.
He said the club is likely to beef up its attacking machinery to ensure efficiency in the second round.
Super League of Malawi General Secretary, Williams Banda, congratulated all stakeholders for a successful first round and said the transfer window would open today.
“We will sit down with Football Association of Malawi to review the football calendar. We will then announce the date of closure of the transfer window and the kickoff of the second round. But the first round has been very competitive as the gap between the top team and the one at the bottom is not that big,” Banda said.
In yesterday’s matches, defending champions Be Forward Wanderers cemented their third slot on the table with a 1-0 win over Mafco. Defender Stanley Sanudi scored the lone goal to help his team amass 28 points.
But Nchalo remain rooted to the bottom of the table with 10 points after they lost 1-2 to Blue Eagles. The cops scored through Micium Mhone and Maxwell Salambula while the Lower Shire giants netted their consolation through Masautso Gemu.
Fourth-placed Civil Sporting Club came from behind to share points with Mzuni in a 1-1 stalemate. The Green Intellectuals found the net through Henry Misinjo before Raphael Phiri equalised.
