BY REBECCA CHIMJEKA:
Following the leakage of an investigative report on a food ration deal involving Malawi Police Service and Pioneer Investments, the Legal Affairs Committee of Parliament intends to summon the Anti- Corruption Bureau (ACB) on the issue.
The committee wants to carry out an inquiry into the matter as well as the contents of the report.
According to chairperson of the committee, Maxwell Thyolera, as soon as the committee has been reconstituted, it will invite all the concerned parties for further investigations.
“We are concerned that a document containing such sensitive information can be leaked,” Thyolera said.
Meanwhile, a law expert based in Capetown, Danwood Chirwa said the ACB must arrest those implicated in the deal while Parliament must start impeachment procedure of President Peter Mutharika, who is a sole signatory of an account into which K145 million was deposited a day after payment of the deal was made.
“The ACB should have made the report available to Parliament for it to take appropriate action. It must submit the docket and all the evidence to Parliament now,” Chirwa said.
He said there is a likelihood that the ACB has more information on corruption involving high profile officials but the graft-busting body cannot act independently due to political interference.
“This is enough evidence that political parties in Malawi are criminal enterprises whose primary victims are the state and its people and primary beneficiaries are those who hold high office and their cronies, “Chirwa said.
