BY PETER KANJERE:

MALAWI under-20 national football team Coach, Meke Mwase, has said his charges’ 1-0 win in Zambia on Sunday augurs well with his game-plan for next month’s crucial games against South Africa’s Amajita.

The Junior Flames travelled to Zambia for the friendly ahead of the third and final qualifying two-legged matches against Amajita in the under-20 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals scheduled for Niger in March, 2019.

In a post-match interview with the press in Zambia, Mwase said they needed to show character on the road, knowing that they will also start with an away game against South Africa.

“We are happy that we won. We chose Zambia [reigning under-20 Afcon champions] because they have a very good team. We worked very hard and we won. Our first game against South Africa is away [on July 15] and that is why we chose to play against Zambia,” Mwase said.

Malawi will host South Africa on the weekend of July 21, with the overall winner over the two legs sailing through to the finals.

The Junior Flames qualified for the final round after seeing off Angola 5-2 on aggregate, losing 1-2 in Lilongwe before stunning opponents 4-1 in the second-leg to progress to the final round.

Malawi last qualified for the Afcon finals at the under-20 level in 1999 after eliminating South Africa in the qualifiers which took place in 1998.
