Wrestlers intensify preparations for Olympics

Wrestling Federation of Malawi has started a talent identification exercise in preparation for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games in Japan.

National Coach, Bright Limani, on Thursday said they would begin the exercise by organising a national tournament at Kamuzu Institute for Sports in Lilongwe on June 30.

“We expect 26 wrestlers from all regions to come with their coaches. We believe that this is the right time to start the preparations. We believe that we have quality athletes capable of bringing medals to the country,” Limani said.

The coach called for support to enable the association to achieve its goal.

“Our main problem is lack of resources. In Malawi, we do not have a wrestling mat, which is very expensive. Wrestling gears are also a challenge for us. But we believe that the national tournament will help us connect to other well-wishers,” Limani said.
