With the 2018 Fifa World Cup getting underway in Russia today, some football personalities have commented on who they think can win the title. Legendary Lawrence Waya, who works in Polokwane, South Africa, as an auditor, yesterday put his money on Brazil and Nigeria whereas football analyst Charles Nyirenda opted for France, Brazil, Spain and Germany.
“I have always liked the way Brazil play and the talent they produce. My other choice is Nigeria owing to their record in previous World cups,” the Nyasa Big Bullets legend said Thursday.
Commenting on his choice, Nyirenda said:
“The reason is that, in the qualifiers and on the run-in to the finals itself, they have shown to be very solid. They also have depth and that, coupled with experience, is more than enough ammunition to take them to the summit of world football.”
Be Forward Wanderers defender, Harry Nyirenda, is also banking on Nigeria to earn Africa the first-ever World Cup title whereas Football Association of Malawi Competitions Manager, Gomezgani Zakazaka, fancies holders Germany.
“In Africa, l am going for Nigeria. I have watched them play some friendlies and I think they are ready and they can compete. I am also behind Brazil because most of their players are in form and are hungry,” Nyirenda said.
Zakazaka said he will go for Germany because “they have shown great consistency at major tournaments over the past 16 years. Since their Euro 200 humiliation, when they were knocked out in the group stages without a single win, the Germans went into a rebuilding exercise, which is producing young talented players, year in and year-out.”
Capital Radio sports journalist, Phinex Chidaya, also vouched for the Super Eagles because “they are pretty strong; they didn’t lose any game during the qualifiers and they have been consistent. But when they get booted out, I am for Portugal and France.”
