Pugilist Alick Mwenda defeated Zimbabwe-born boxer Brian Mwando through retirement to win the country’s middleweight belt at M1 CenterPoint in Lilongwe on Sunday.
It was an entertaining bout which saw the two boxers exchanging a flurry of punches in seven rounds. Despite dominating the early rounds, Mwando retired in the eighth round after some clever punches from Mwenda.
In his victory speech, Mwenda expressed delight with the win.
“I am happy because I am the champion. He gave me a good game and I knew he would come hard on me, but there can only be one winner,” Mwenda said.
Speaking soon after the bout, Mwando said he was quitting the game.
“I said this is my last fight because I have realised that it is not easy to earn a living through boxing,” Mwando said.
In the main supporting bout, Charles Misanjo defeated fading star Kudakwache Banda, who lost his third consecutive bout.
Previously, Banda was touted as the next big thing in the country’s boxing circles but his career has taken a reverse gear in recent fights.
Gunde Boxing Promotions organised the bout. The stable’s Director, Jack Gunde, said he was satisfied with the turnout of fans for the bouts. He promised to continue organising more fights to help develop the game across the country.
“The atmosphere was just great and I believe the fans enjoyed all the fights. Our aim is to organise top class bouts so that we keep our fans, who have been supporting us, entertained,” Gunde said.
