Volleyball national team set for revival

Volleyball Association of Malawi (Vam) has promised to build a strong national team.

Vam General Secretary, Jairos Nkhoma, made the promise on the sidelines of a two-day Volleyball Easter Bonanza at Katoto Sports Complex in Mzuzu on Monday.

Nkhoma said he was impressed with the standard of volleyball in all the regions.

He added that the association wants to organise three national tournaments this year.

“As Vam, we want to increase the base for the national coaches. By having a lot of tournaments, we want clubs and individuals to improve technically. And in doing so, it will be easy for the national coaches to spot capable players,” he said.

“I can assure you that come next year, we are going to have a much better team for both men and ladies.”

The event, which started on Sunday in Mzuzu, attracted 13 teams from the Northern Region.

Northern Region Volleyball League (NRVL) Treasurer, Nick Liwewe, said the bonanza was meant to bring the teams.

“The regional league [for the Northern Region] will start on May 13 and this bonanza was one of the ways of helping the teams to improve their playing standard. Our teams had overstayed without playing in any tournament,” Liwewe said.

He rued lack of sponsorship as the main reason behind volleyball teams’ struggles on the international level.
