Two suspects will appear before the Lilongwe Magistrates’ Court Tuesday for allegedly being found in possession of fake tickets during the Chifundo Charity Shield involving Nyasa Big Bullets and Kamuzu Barracks on Saturday.
Peter Minofu and Weston Garnet—both from Mulanje District—were arrested during the match at Civo Stadium.
Lilongwe Police spokesperson, Kingsley Dandaula, said the two will answer charges of forgery and altering false document.
“Our investigations are underway and once we finalise it, we will know the actual source of the fake tickets. They [suspects] were supposed to appear in court on Monday [yesterday] but it was not possible due to the Easter Holiday,” Dandaula said.
Minofu and Garnet were allegedly found in possession of three booklets of match-day tickets and K14, 300.
As of Monday, Football Association of Malawi (Fam) was still reconciling the tickets to determine how much was realised during the match.
During the Wafawafa Big Four Bonanza held at Bingu National Stadium, William Wilesi and Mustafa Kapatamoyo were arrested on similar charges and were reportedly released on bail.
Since the Chifundo Charity Shield was introduced last year, fake tickets have been part of the event.
On Saturday, Bullets were crowned champions for the second successive year after beating Kamuzu Barracks 3-1.
Muhammad Sulumba scored a brace with the other goal coming from Fischer Kondowe whereas Mustafa Salimu netted the soldiers’ face-saver.
