Silver Strikers, Mozambique club friendly cancelled

Fans were left in suspense on Sunday afternoon after a friendly between Silver Strikers and Planet FC from Mozambique was cancelled at the 11 hour.

The match was scheduled for Nankhaka Ground in Lilongwe.

Silver General Secretary, Thabo Nyirenda, said the match was postponed after the Mozambican team failed to obtain documents from that country’s football association.

“We were cleared by Football Association of Malawi (Fam) to host the team but we discovered that our counterparts were not cleared by their FA. It is a big setback because we planned for the game and the players were ready,” Nyirenda said.

However, reports suggest that Planet FC lost 3-0 to Mbuna FC of Lilongwe in a strength testing match on Saturday.

In preparation for the forthcoming season, Silver have bolstered their squad with 10 players, including Trevor Kalema, Paul Chikalema, Mike Tetteh, Hadji Wali, Frank Chizuze and Yunusa Sherrif.

But Silver lost skipper Lucky Malata, who joined Be Forward Wanderers, Nation Harazi, Chimwemwe Chisambi ( both Kamuzu Barracks) and Wonder German to Dwangwa United.

The Central Bankers have lost four consecutive pre-season games. Last season, Silver finished on third position with 56 points, five adrift of champions, Kamuzu Barracks.
