Mary Waya Academy has embarked on a talent identification exercise targeting under-16 primary school girls in Blantyre.
The academy’s founder, Mary Waya, said successful players from the exercise will be incorporated into a squad that will host St John’s Academy from the United Kingdom.
The test matches against the visitors are slated for October at Blantyre Youth Centre.
On Saturday, Waya organised a netball clinic at Kanjedza Primary School targeting players from six schools under the Limbe zone.
From the Limbe zone, Waya identified three players.
“It has been a fruitful clinic because we have selected the players and also taught them the rules of the game, coaching and umpiring. We are sure that if we impart the knowledge to these young girls at the grassroots, they will grow up mastering them, which in turn, will make them great netballers,” Waya said.
She further urged the corporate world to bail out the academy with funding.
Barnet Nanthambwe, Kanjedza Primary School sports teacher, said Waya’s initiative will improve the up-and-coming netballers’ standard of play in the Mayor’s Trophy this year.
“Such initiatives will improve the sport at the primary school level, making these girls good future players,” he said.
The clinic attracted 96 pupils with Waya drilling them alongside other netballer stars such as Kukoma Diamonds’ Jessica Sanudi.
