Small and Medium Enterprises Development Institute (Smedi) has reiterated that it is only through the provision of special skills training that the country can boost small scale entrepreneurs.
Smedi Acting Chief Executive Officer, Richard Zidana, said training skills, for example, in financial management and resource utilisation, can go a long way in increasing household incomes.
Zidana said this during the graduation ceremony of over 200 Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).
“SMEs have been trained in financial management in the areas of budgeting and utilisation of resources in terms of how best the community can utilise the little resources that they have in order to develop some resilience in the midst of some disasters,” he said.
SOS Programme Coordinator for Blantyre, Alexander Nguwo expressed satisfaction with the selection of the beneficiaries of the training with the majority being caregivers, saying it will help them carry the additional responsibility of caring for vulnerable children.
“SOS supports children who have lost or those at the risk of losing parental care. So this training is one of the capacity building processes that the caregivers undergo for them to be self-reliant,” Nguwo said.
One of the participants, Marriana Chilundu, described the training as an eye opener saying it will enhance livelihoods of the community.
