In-form Malawian midfielder Robert Ngámbi was sent off on Saturday when his South Africa’s Platinum Stars defeated visiting Ugandan side, Vipers SC, 3-1 at Royal Bafokeng Stadium.
Ng’ambi was sent off deep into stoppage time for picking up two yellow cards. However, the good news is that Stars progressed to the next round of the Caf Confederation Cup 3-2 on aggregate.
Stars, whose other Malawian midfielder Gerald Phiri Junior was not registered for the competition, lost 1-0 in the first leg of the preliminary round.
On Saturday, Stars owed their win to goalkeeper Mbongeni Mzimela who scored two penalties, according to South Africa media reports.
Mzimela converted the first penalty after two minutes following the visitors’ foul on Benson Shilongo.
Stars added the second 31 minutes later through striker Ndumiso Mabena’s cracking goal from a direct free-kick.
The Ugandans scored in the 55th minute only for Stars to increase the lead through Mzimela’s second penalty which sent the South Africans through.
