Malawian international Robert Ng’ambi once again shone for South Africa Premiership side, Platinum Stars, as they qualified for the last 16 of Nedbank Cup on Wednesday night.
The Flames midfielder was among the scorers for Stars when they edged out AmaZulu 3-2 in their last 32 clash at Royal Bafokeng Stadium.
South Africa media reports that AmaZulu took the lead in the 35th minute when Samuel Darpoh’s low cross cut through a cluster of defenders and past Mbongeni Mzimela in the Stars’ goal.
The second-half produced four goals as the game sprang to life, with Stars quickly turning things around.
Mzimela converted a spot-kick after Vuyo Mere was fouled in the area and then Ng’ambi made it 2-1 for Stars.
However, AmaZulu equalised just three minutes later through Boysen Mbatha to set up an exciting last 30 minutes, which was capped off by a late Henrico Botes winner.
Stars also featured in midfield another Flames player Gerald Phiri Junior who has never missed a local game in South Africa since he received his work permit that had kept him out of action for a year.
In another game involving Malawians, Bidvest Wits rested their key players, including Gabadinho Mhango, but still progressed to the last 16 after a 2-0 victory over Cape Town All Stars at Athlone Stadium, Cape Town.
After a goalless first-half, Mogakolodi Ngele scored a brace in the second-half to put Wits through.
Former Flames assistant coach Patrick Mabedi is the coach for the First Division side, Cape Town All Stars.
