Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board (MPBCB) is yet to reclaim belts from boxers, Chrispin Moliyati, Brian Mwando and Kudakwache Nkhakamira Banda, despite the board’s stance made in September.
Former lightweight champion, Moliyati, who is now the contender number one, middleweight champion, Mwando and Nkhakamira Banda were stripped off their belts for several reasons.
Moliyati lost the belt after failing to defend it within the mandatory three months whereas Kudakwache and Mwando suffered knockout defeats.
Mwando retired against Felix Mwamaso in a non-title fight whereas Kudakwache was knocked out by Limbani Masamba in another non-title contest.
No Pain No Gain Boxing Promotions’ Managing Director, Craig Rousseau, confirmed that his boxer, Moliyati, was keeping the belt.
“We did not get official communication. I am sure that if they had notified us officially, we could have cooperated,” he said.
The board’s spokesperson, Frank Chibisa, said their officers faced resistance when they went to collect the belts.
“This will force us to take tough action in future. Whenever boxers are fighting, we are planning that we should just be presenting symbolic belts to the champions and once the ceremony is over, we should be getting it back to avoid similar cases,” he said.
