8 leave for African Union Games

Malawi team of eight athletes and three officials left for Mozambique on Wednesday to participate in this year’s African Union (AU) Games in Maputo.

The team comprises Harry Sichali and Doris Fisher in the full–marathon category while veterans, Rodwell Kamwendo and Nancy Matanda, will compete in half-marathon.

Cecilia Mhango and Frank Chitembeya Jnr will represent Malawi in the 400 metres category, whereas Prisca Kachala and Alinafe Pula will compete in the same category, but on what is called ‘Special Olympics”.

The runners had camp training for a week at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre under coach Dennis Phiri.

Athletics Association of Malawi General Secretary, Frank Chitembeya Snr, said the competitors were in good shape.

Team leader, Isaac Phiri, said overall, the athletes prepared for the event for a year.

“You may wish to know that these athletes have been participating in various competitions and are fully-geared to shine in Mozambique,”

Phiri explained.

Sichali, Fisher, Kamwendo and Matanda were outstanding in the Sunbird Ku Chawe Mountain Race in Zomba two weeks ago.
