In response to an increase in abductions and killings of people with albinism in the country, TNM in partnership with the Association of People with Albinism in Malawi (APAM), has launched a free hotline service through which people can report cases of abuse of people with albinism.

Through the hotline, the public can call 772 for free from any TNM number to report suspected cases of abuse of people with albinism. The line will be managed by Malawi Police Services Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

Speaking during the official launch of the hotline, TNM Managing Executive, Regional Operations, Phyllis Manguluti, said the mobile phone operator is concerned with an increase in attacks on people with albinism and decided to join hands with Malawians of goodwill to stop the malpractice.

“We believe toll free line will help law enforcers in their quest of improving security, especially for people with Albinism in the country through the provision of easily accessible tips from the general public,” said Manguluti.

APAM president, Boniface Massa, commended TNM for the initiative. He said the battle against this vice can only be won if all Malawians joined hands and start fighting it from all fronts.

“We would like to appreciate the support that TNM has given to us and these will go a long way in ensuring that our lives are protected as we will be able to get assistance from police easily now that there is this free line,” said Massa.

In his remarks, Assistant Superintendent, James Mbale, said the hotline comp lemen ts the law enforcer’s efforts to deal with cases of abuse of people with albinism.

“On behalf of Malawi Police Services, I would like to thank TNM for this timely donation, this hotline complements our initiatives to address the suffering of our brothers and sisters with albinism, “said Mbale.
