Zomba-based Magang’a and Lady Bravehearts from Lilongwe were on Sunday night crowned King and Queen of the Courts Basketball Tournament’s champions for men’s and ladies’ categories, respectively.
Magang’a defied all odds to defeat giants, Bricks 68-38, in an entertaining final at Civo Basketball Court, whereas Lady Bravehearts beat Angels at the same venue.
For being champions, Magang’a received K800, 000, gold medals and a trophy, whereas Bricks got K400, 000 and silver medals.
Bravehearts pocketed K500, 000, gold medals and a trophy, whereas second-placed Angels received K200, 000 and medals.
Magang’a coach-player, Hope Chisamanga, was pleased with the victory, saying team-work was the key to their success.
“The players did an exceptional job and they were determined to win the competition. Bricks are a good team but we were too good for them on the court,” Chisamanga said.
Bricks coach-player, Victor Jere, admitted played second fiddle to the eventual champions.
“It was a bad night for us but our opponents played well. We tried everything but we could not cope up with their pace,” he said.
Daud Hussein, Chief Executive Officer for one of the sponsoring firms Dr Print, who watched the games alongside G.Y Imports & Exports Managing Director, Griffin Kalua, described the two-week tournament as entertaining.
“We watched top-class basketball and the teams have really improved.
As sponsors, we are really excited with the progress of the game in
the country,” Hussein said.
The national tournament was sponsored by GY Imports and Exports–dealers in furniture, ICT equipment, stationary, tiles, toilet sets and building materials
