British national, Brendan Rendall, is running through Malawi from Chitipa Border to Marka in Nsanje to raise K35 million for the construction of a science block for orphaned children at Friends of Mulanje Orphans (Fomo).
Rendall, one of 15 Ordinance Survey ambassadors for outdoor pursuits who is expected to run a revised 28 marathons in 28 days started off, at Chitipa border, on June 29.
Rendall said in an interview, in Mzuzu yesterday, that he had already covered 336 kilometres from Chitipa to Mzuzu and that he had the energy to complete 1,176 kilometres.
“For four to five years since 2009, I have been doing some marathons in the UK for Fomo orphans and I only came back [this year] to see the orphans I had been running for and I thought of running through this beautiful country in their aid.
“Last year I did three marathons in 12 months in 12 weeks and I did another 58 km and then I had to run coast to coast from the west to the east side of the UK which is about 300 km in eight days just to prepare for this marathon,” said Rendall.
The marathons in Malawi, Rendall says can last him slightly above four hours.
After covering the distance on each day, the Briton who is accompanied by Fomo officials including Fomo founder, Mary Woodworth, camps in various primary schools along the way and donates sports equipment.
While commending Rendall for the initiative, Woodworth urged Malawians to support this initiative.
Fomo covers children’s welfare in aspects of health, education, food security and production.
