Millennium Challenge Account – Malawi (MCA-Malawi) has handed over seven vehicles to Non- Governmental Organisations (NGOs) implementing Environment and Natural Resource Management (ENRM) Project activities in Upper and Middle Shire River catchment areas.

Speaking during the handover, MCA – Malawi’s Chief Executive Officer, Dye Mawindo said management of the environment is critical in mitigating the impact of weed and sedimentation on the Shire River, which is the main source of hydropower generation in the country.

MCA-Malawi handed over the vehicles to Training Support for Partners (TSP), Concern Universal, We Effect, Foundation for Irrigation and Sustainable Development (FISD) Assemblies of God Cares, Circle for Integrated Community Development (CICOD) and Self Help Africa.

Speaking on behalf of the receiving NGOs, Executive Director for TSP, Robert Kafakoma expressed optimism that the vehicles will ease mobility which will in turn accelerate implementation of the ENRM projects.

In 2016, MCA-Malawi disbursed over $6 million to 11 non-governmental organisations to implement Environment and Natural Resources Management and Social and Gender Enhancement activities in Upper and Middle Shire River catchment areas.

The ENRM and SGEF grant funds are part of the $350.7Million Millennium Challenge Corporation Compact Grant for the Power Sector Revitalization Program from the people of the United States of America aimed at increasing efficiency in hydropower generation in Malawi.
