The Malawi Communication Regulatory Authority (Macra) on Wednesday unveiled a five year strategic plan that will guide the operations of the firm up to 2020.

Speaking in Blantyre during the launch, Macra Director General, Godfrey Itaye, said the new strategic plan is aimed at accelerating the development of Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) in the country.

Itaye said the blueprint, which has 14 key performance indicators, is vital for the success of not only Macra, but also of the whole ICT industry.

“The creation of an ICT enabling environment, focusing on regulatory issues and ICT infrastructure that promote development is a critical factor to this success.

“As a nation, we have innovative minds but without the relevant regulatory framework and ICT infrastructure we will get nowhere,” said Itaye.

He observed that the strategic plan is built around two core strategic areas of  regulation and research that are critical for operational excellence and financial stability.

Itaye noted that the blueprint was developed using a balanced scorecard methodology and was structured into for perspectives which are customer and stakeholder engagement; internal process alignment; learning and growth; as well as financial prudence and credibility.

“These perspectives are critical for achieving our vision and will provide a basis for evaluation of the authority’s performance by our stakeholders,” said Itaye.

Macra Chairperson, Mervis Mangulenje, while congratulating the firm’s management for the launch of the blueprint said plans are only good intentions unless they immediately degenerate into hard work.

“So let us see this milestone as only the beginning. There is a long road ahead but with hard work and determination, I am confident that the goals we have set out will be achieved.

“I would like to assure management and staff of Macra that you have the board’s full support in the implementation of this plan,” said Mangulenje.
