Youthful defender Miracle Gabeya, whose goal earned the Flames a 1-0 win over Mauritius on his 20th birthday on Tuesday, says he is not shaken by critics who, question his national team selection.
Gabeya, who was born on June 14 1996, scored in the 47th minute from Gerald Phiri Jnr’s corner kick to keep the Flames’ Cosafa Castle Cup quarterfinal dream alive in Group B in Namibia.
Gabeya, who lacks game-time at Nyasa Big Bullets, was also voted man-of-the match by Cosafa to receive a miniature trophy and a smart phone at the Independence Stadium in Windhoek.
“I am happy that I have played well and I have scored. Winning the man of-the match award was something special. I know a lot has been said since coach Ernest Mtawali took me to the national team. Others say that I am not a national team, let alone Bullets’ material, but I still focus on my future,” Gabeya said while shedding tears.
Flames assistant coach Nsanzurwimo Ramadan said the defender needs more game-time at his club to maintain his Flames’ performance.
“It is good for a player to show that he can make it. We have seen from this young man Gabeya that he has potential for Malawi football. I am sure that with time, he will be a good player,” Ramadhan said.
