With pomp and fanfare, First Merchant Bank (FMB) renewed its romance with Hockey Association of Malawi (Ham) by re-launching the 2016 edition of hockey league in Blantyre on Saturday.

Song and dance spiced up the mourning launch at Country Club Limbe where guest of honour, FMB Limbe branch manager, Grace Mtambalika, pledged continued sponsorship to the sport.

“FMB is really committed to sports, especially hockey. We also sponsor cricket, football and rugby. We would like to give back to the community through sports. We will continue supporting you until you reach the level of football,” Mtambalika said in her speech.

Ham General Secretary, Chigo Thindwa, hailed FMB for sponsoring hockey for five consecutive years. This year’s league sponsorship is pegged at K2.5 million.

“The FMB league is the anchor of hockey in Malawi and we consider FMB as, indeed, a true partner of hockey. The league has had a huge impact on the development of hockey,” he said.

The league was expected to get underway yesterday at National Hockey Stadium in Blantyre.
