Malawi government says it has plans to launch a policy on the Best Buy Malawian campaign which will govern its implementation across all sectors.
Ministry of Industry and Trade Spokesperson Wiskes Mkombezi said government will ensure that the initiative is a success and that having a policy frame work would help to guide the implementation of the campaign.
He said the pharmaceautical sector has benefited from a similar initiative when in 2009 government instituted a policy to ensure that all products in the pharmaceutical sector be acquired within the country.
“The results so far are good but we only targeted the pharmaceutical sector. If that would roll out to the rest of the sectors, it would have been better. As government, our role has always been to create a framework for quality assurance and the infrastructure is already in place. We are now upgrading to meet international standards,” said Nkombezi.
He added that the Buy Malawian campaign, if successfully executed, would help Malawi minimise imports and in turn save foreign exchange.
“To the manufacturer and the trader, we urge them to continue making quality products for our market. Quality is the way and as government, we will continue to support them. To the consumers and the buyers, this is the time we should consume Malawian products for the good of the economy,” said Nkombezi.
