Over 140 member of staff from Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) have completed a two-week long training course in Disaster Recovery Planning and Business Continuity which was taking place in Mangochi.
The training was, among other things, aimed at equipping the members of staff with skills for identifying disaster prone areas and develop best practices for recovery and business continuity.
Speaking when he closed the training workshop, Escom’s company secretary and director of social services, Everson Sitolo, said the training will help prevent adhoc handling of disasters at the institution.
“Escom operates in a very high risk environment of floods, dry spells and vandalism. This training has enhanced our preparedness to anticipate a disaster and find ways of mitigating the effects,” Sitolo said.
The training, said Sitolo, has been a success and that the corporation will now come up with a disaster recovery plan to guide such activities in the next 18 months.
“This will help minimise effects of natural disasters on Escom’s customers and operations,” said Sitolo.
Speaking when he opened the training workshop earlier, Escom chief executive Officer John Kandulu described Malawi’s over reliance on hydroelectric power as a risk.
Currently the organisation is working on finding and investing in alternative sources of electricity.
