Azam Tigers have appointed Owen Chomanika, owner of Southern Region Football Association Premier League side, Chikwawa United, as the KauKau’s vice-chairperson.
Tigers chairperson, Sydney Chikoti, and Chomanika confirmed the development on Wednesday.
Chikoti said the hiring of Chomanika was, in part, meant to fulfill Club Licencing System requirements being advanced by Football Association of Malawi (Fam) in collaboration with Super League of Malawi (Sulom).
Chikoti said he had been consulting Chomanika since January to consider making Chikwawa as Tigers’ feeder team.
He said Tigers had no vice-chairperson, and relied on their technical director, Robin Alufandika to combine administrative duties.
“We thought we needed to rope in a few more people in our executive so that we help each other to run the club. Actually, what we discussed was to incorporate Chikwawa as our youth team,” Chikoti said.
Chomanika said he was happy to be part of Tigers executive committee.
“I will work with them to transform the club. I am sure my club will also benefit from this relationship. We discussed at length on some of the structures we need to finalise before the kick-off of the new season,” Chomanika said.
Meanwhile, the 2009 Standard Bank championship- winning player, Sammy Ngwira, is back as Tigers team manager.
“I am happy to be here again after five years. I am sure I will help them build a strong squad,” Ngwira said.
