Malawi Revenue Authority say the fire that broke out at their Songwe Border Station on Friday morning has not affected their operations.
In a statement released on Friday signed by the tax collector’s Commissioner General Tom Malata, the authority says the “fire broke out in the warehouse and it is being suspected to have been caused by an electric spark and affected a few groceries and cosmetic goods that were stored in the warehouse. However, all members of staff, equipment and tax documents are safe and intact”.
“Meanwhile, members of the business community and the public are being informed that Songwe Border Station is now operating on backup system and that necessary steps are being taken to restore full automated service at the station as soon as possible,” says the statement.
MRA say they are yet “to conduct a full assessment of the damages caused by the fire.”
Songwe Border Station is the second largest border station located at Malawi’s northern frontier bordering Tanzania.
