Minister of Sports and Culture, Grace Chiumia, has called on local churches to embrace sporting activities as one way of promoting different sport codes.<\/p>\n
Chiumia was speaking on Saturday at Winners Chapel Blantyre where she graced the Inter-Denomination Sports bonanza which attracted seven churches.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is a known fact that churches provide the spiritual food to individuals. But, in this case churches have demonstrated that they can also contribute to health, social and economic development of the country. We need healthy citizens to develop the country. Sports help individuals to maintain health,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Chiumia also advised local athletes from different sport codes to be spiritually sensitive.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou cannot separate a prayer from sports. For instance, before each game starts we normally see players praying, asking for divine intervention,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
One of the event\u2019s organising committee members, Bishop Stowell Kumwenda of Living Waters Church, said they were planning to make the event bigger and better.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was good for Christians to come together and unwind through sports. This is obviously a start and we want to involve more churches next time. We also plan to have more sport codes next time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Resident Pastor at Winners Chapel Blantyre, Joseph Mambala, said they were delighted to host the event.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Bible also advises us not to disregard sport. We would like to make the event annual,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Participants competed in tug-of-war, netball, chess and draughts, among others.<\/p>\n
Charismatic Renewal Ministries, Living Waters Church, World of Faith Temple, Unity of God Ministries and Winners Chapel were some of the churches that took part.<\/p>\n
Social teams from Sobo and Standard Bank also participated.<\/p>\n
In ladies tug-of-war, Word of Faith Temple were champions with Winners Chapel Men winning the men\u2019s section of the event.<\/p>\n
