{"id":8878,"date":"2015-09-17T11:16:03","date_gmt":"2015-09-17T11:16:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=8878"},"modified":"2015-09-17T11:16:03","modified_gmt":"2015-09-17T11:16:03","slug":"president-peter-mutharika-suspects-sabotage-in-cement-malata-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2015\/09\/17\/president-peter-mutharika-suspects-sabotage-in-cement-malata-project\/","title":{"rendered":"President Peter Mutharika suspects sabotage in cement-malata project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President Peter has queried the quality of iron sheets some contractors engaged in the Decent and Affordable Housing Subsidy Programme are using and has warned them of unspecified action if the trend continues.<\/p>\n<p>Digressing from his prepared speech at the official opening of Chiradzulu Teachers\u2019 Training College, Mutharika expressed displeasure at the conduct of the contractors who he said were suspiciously sabotaging the project from meeting its outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet me warn you,\u201d Mutharika said, \u201cWe know you and whatever you are doing to sabotage this initiative. We will not relent as government until you are caught and punished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The project is expected to benefit close to 15,440 houses across the country<\/p>\n<p>On the newly opened college and education, Mutharika lamented the teacher-pupil ratio that currently stands at around 78 pupils to one teacher, observing the situation is baffling to a nation that is looking forward to improving its education standards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not acceptable. As a country we deserve the best and we can do better,\u201d said Mutharika.<\/p>\n<p>He said government is committed to reversing the deteriorating education standards and that construction of infrastructure like teacher training colleges is one way of ensuring that the quality of education is restored.<\/p>\n<p>Minister of Education Emmanuel Fabiano said the college, which will primarily be training primary school teachers, is critical in restoring the country\u2019s lost education image.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe shortage of teachers in the country is one of the factors that have led to the dwindling education standards in the country. We cannot improve the quality of education without training adequate teachers for our schools and it remains government\u2019s desire to reduce the teacher-pupil ratio.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the opening of the college we are sure that the number of qualified teachers in our primary schools will increase, thereby making our efforts to reduce the qualified teacher-pupil ratio in the coming years a reality,\u201d said Fabiano.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Peter has queried the quality of iron sheets some contractors engaged in the Decent and Affordable Housing Subsidy Programme are using and has warned them of unspecified action if the trend continues.
