{"id":8680,"date":"2015-09-14T09:06:15","date_gmt":"2015-09-14T09:06:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=8680"},"modified":"2015-09-14T09:06:15","modified_gmt":"2015-09-14T09:06:15","slug":"businessman-donates-k3-1m-equipment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2015\/09\/14\/businessman-donates-k3-1m-equipment\/","title":{"rendered":"Businessman donates K3.1m equipment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Malawian Canada-based businessperson Willy Yabwanya Phiri has donated football equipment to three teams in Karonga valued at K3.1 million.<\/p>\n<p>Yabwanya Phiri distributed 75 pairs of football boots, jerseys, 20 balls, goal keeper gloves and many other items to be shared among three teams he sponsors\u2014Karonga United, Karonga United Reserve and Yabwanya FC club.<\/p>\n<p>He said the idea was to ease challenges the youth face in their clubs in their quest to develop talent.<\/p>\n<p>He said the equipment would help provide a conducive football playing environment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a soccer fan, born and brought up in Karonga, I worked in South Africa before settling in Canada for over 20 years. I thought I should assist in developing the sport which has struggled for long due to lack of equipment,\u201d Yabwanya, a former Chilumba Secondary School student, said.<\/p>\n<p>He said despite staying in Canada, he has been assisting Karonga United when it was in the Super League.<\/p>\n<p>Yabwanya said former stars like Kinnah Phiri, Ernest Mtawali and Dave Muyombe, left a football legacy in Karonga that needs to be sustained.<\/p>\n<p>He advised the beneficiaries to take good care of the items.<\/p>\n<p>Karonga United coach, Abraham Mwakhwawa , thanked Phiri for the gesture, saying the donation was a relief to the clubs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Malawian Canada-based businessperson Willy Yabwanya Phiri has donated football equipment to three teams in Karonga valued at K3.1 million.
