{"id":8611,"date":"2015-09-11T08:22:05","date_gmt":"2015-09-11T08:22:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=8611"},"modified":"2015-09-11T08:22:06","modified_gmt":"2015-09-11T08:22:06","slug":"malawi-government-flags-vocational-skills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2015\/09\/11\/malawi-government-flags-vocational-skills\/","title":{"rendered":"Malawi government flags vocational skills"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Malawi government has said current employment challenges call for new and innovative ways of creating job opportunities for young people in the country such as Vocational skills development.<\/p>\n<p>Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Labour, Youth and Manpower Development Patrick Kabambe said this Thursday as Development Aid from People to People (Dapp) graduated 50 young people who have undergone vocational training in practical agriculture, brick laying and construction, renewable energy, electrical Installation, carpentry and joinery and tin smith at DAPP\u2019s Mikolongwe Vocational School in Chiradzulu District.<\/p>\n<p>The four-month training is part of the ongoing Youth in Action Project which is being run with financial support from Save the Children and has seen youth from Ntchisi, Mchinji and Rumphi districts benefiting.<\/p>\n<p>Kabambe said government is investing in vocational skills development as one way of reducing unemployment among the youth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCurrent trends have shown a decline in white collar or office job opportunities and this trend is mostly affecting young people most of whom are just finishing their education and lack experience. It is in this vein that as government, we now want to focus on vocational skills development among young people to economically empower them.\u201d Kabambe said.<\/p>\n<p>He also stated that developing vocational and entrepreneurship skills among young people could be a solution to Malawi\u2019s heavy dependence on imports from outside the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTechnical and vocational skills are in sync with the country\u2019s export strategy as it will spur innovations among young people to add value to local products and export them to other countries for the much needed foreign currency.\u201d He said.<\/p>\n<p>In his remarks, Principal for DAPP Mikolongwe Vocational school Augustine Kaliati hailed Save the Children for sponsoring the project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany young people most of whom dropped out of school will be economically empowered through this initiative and apart from that, the training has been designed in such a way that skills learnt here will directly benefit communities from which the students come from.\u201d Kaliati said.<\/p>\n<p>The graduating students also received start up equipment each as per his or her trade so as to empower them start their own businesses once out of school.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Malawi government has said current employment challenges call for new and innovative ways of creating job opportunities for young people in the country such as Vocational skills development.
