BeForward Wanderers dream of a cup treble is on track after holding their nerves to sneak past a 10-man Mafco 4-3 on post-match penalties and clinching a Standard Bank Knock-Out Cup quarterfinal berth on Thursday.<\/p>\n
There were scenes of jubilation at Civo Stadium as the 2015 Carlsberg Cup kings, Wanderers, shrugged off Mafco following a goal-less draw in regulation time of the preliminary round match.<\/p>\n
The Nomads next meet Red Lions in the last eight match joining Dedza Young Soccer Stars who saw off Kamuzu Barracks 10-9 also through penalty lotteries the previous day at the same venue.<\/p>\n
Wanderers were stretched to the limit in normal play. The Nomads failed to make their numerical advantage count after Paul Ndlovu of Mafco was red-carded in the 39th minute for fouling Nomads goalkeeper Richard Chipuwa.<\/p>\n
The Nomads converted their spot-kicks through Alfred Manyozo Jnr, Stanley Sanudi, Mike Kaziputa and Victor Nyirenda but Rafik Mussa\u2019s attempt hit the post.<\/p>\n
Mafco scored through Jailosi Kapalamula, Maurice Chiumia and Paul Phiri, whereas Osward Nkagula had his penalty saved by Richard Chipuwa before Zasher Mnongoneza hit the post with the last attempt.<\/p>\n
In a post-match interview, Wanderers vice-team manager, Steve Madeira, was on cloud nine.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was a tough match, but I am happy because the players did well. We are still in the hunt for treble this season,\u201d said Madeira.<\/p>\n
Mafco coach, Thomas Maloya rued missed chances, adding that \u201cWanderers were good during penalties.\u201d<\/p>\n
During open play, the first half ended goalless as both teams failed to grab the opener.<\/p>\n
