World football governing body, Fifa, has advised Football Association of Malawi (Fam) to put proper structures to ensure that the country develops grassroots talent that is usually lost at youth level.<\/p>\n
Fifa\u2019s technical development officer, Govinden Thondoo, made the remarks yesterday during the opening ceremony of a week-long grassroots football coaching course at Chiwembe Technical and Development Centre in Blantyre.<\/p>\n
Some 32 coaches from the Southern and Eastern regions will take part in the course, with Thondoo calling for patience and good programmes when developing talent from the grassroots.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn Africa, we do not really have clubs that take care of young players. However, most of Africa\u2019s young players are playing elsewhere. Therefore, there is need for restructuring of our football so that it should be played in more schools within our communities to give the young players an opportunity to play football and the coaches the opportunity to observe the best players,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cGrassroots is very important because it gives the kids the opportunity to play football and then the kids can fulfill their potential through sound youth football development programmes. As Fifa, we will continue training coaches and working with the Ministry of Education to make sure that grassroots football develops in the next four to five years.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fam executive member, Flora Mwandira, advised the coaches to make an impact in their communities through the knowledge they would acquire through the course.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe coaches are some of our major partners in football development.<\/p>\n
They should share the knowledge with their fellow coaches so that they can all work together in developing football.<\/p>\n
Grassroots football is very important because it forms the foundation of the country\u2019s football development plans,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Fifa has pledged to provide more support through trainings and use education as a tool for giving kids under the age of 12 the opportunity to play football.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
