Technical, Entrepreneurial and Vocational Educational and Training Authority (Teveta) has trained 25 women from 11 parishes under the Mzuzu Diocese of the Catholic Church in baking and entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n
The training which falls under Teveta\u2019s Informal Sector Training Programmes ran for a week at St Augustine Parish and it targeted women leaders of the Catholic Women Organisation (CWO) who are set to equip fellow women in their respective congregations with the skills they have attained.<\/p>\n
Speaking during the closing ceremony of the training on Friday Teveta regional manager for the North Concepta Chokani condemned the spirit of selfishness among women saying it is a major enemy of women empowerment.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt Teveta we champion the spirit of giving. Go out and share with others who were not part of the programme. In that way, we will be assured of a nation full of empowered and independent women,\u201d she advised.<\/p>\n
Chokani said that it is in the interest of the organisation to see women take baking as an income generating activity so that they are able to complement their husbands\u2019 efforts in fending for their families.<\/p>\n
She further called for transparency and accountability within the various women church groupings saying it is a gateway to new opportunities.<\/p>\n
\u201cManaging a group is not easy and one of the challenges is income management. I, therefore, call on the leaders of the respective women groups to keep proper records of the businesses you will be running as a group and make sure that the cash flow is well detailed and accessible to every member. This will promote unity and understanding which is very key to every business partnership,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
One of the beneficiaries Brenda Dackshon said the training has come at a right time when most of the women in the church are struggling financially.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs you can see most of us are housewives who barely had anything to do in order to raise income for our families. The skills will help us graduate from a highly dependent life,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n
