{"id":81218,"date":"2019-07-31T02:49:44","date_gmt":"2019-07-31T00:49:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=81218"},"modified":"2019-07-31T02:49:44","modified_gmt":"2019-07-31T00:49:44","slug":"masauko-chipembere-to-star-at-sounds-of-malawi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2019\/07\/31\/masauko-chipembere-to-star-at-sounds-of-malawi\/","title":{"rendered":"Masauko Chipembere to star at Sounds of Malawi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Sam Banda Jnr:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Us-based jazz musician Masauko Chipembere Jr is set to perform at the Sounds of Malawi Acoustic Session at Jacaranda Cultural Centre (JCC) in Blantyre.<\/p>\n<p>JCC Director, Luc Deschamps, confirmed Tuesday that Masauko would be debuting at the session.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cYes he will be performing on Thursday [tomorrow] and this is actually a final show at JCC before we take a two-week break. Masauko is a big artist and we are happy to host him,\u201d<\/em> Deschamps said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He also said Masauko would be performing solo while combining music and storytelling.<\/p>\n<p>Masauko could not be reached for his comment yesterday as we went to press but he wrote on his Facebook page that he was on his way to Malawi.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cI am on my way to Malawi. We have raised $1000 so far which is great. Please donate to support this cause. Gotta admit, stopping in New York on the way to Malawi, the distance between the rich and the poor in the world today is insane. It is also insane right here in New York,\u201d<\/em> Masauko said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The artist is working on different projects using music to assist people and he is raising funds to help people in the country develop permaculture.<\/p>\n<p>Masauko is also expected to perform at Grittah\u2019s in Lilongwe on Saturday, sharing the stage with Ernest Ikwanga, Sam Mkandawire and Chambota Chirwa.<\/p>\n<p>The artist last month released globally his <em>Masauko <\/em>album which he recorded two years ago at Milestone Studio in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from performing and being involved in the permaculture project in the country, Masauko is also expected to celebrate his father\u2019s birthday. Masauko Senior was a Pan Africanist who was key to the independence struggle of Malawi and was born on August 5 1930.<\/p>\n<p>The last time Masauko had a show in the country was at Madsoc Theatre in Lilongwe in 2017 before recording the <em>Masauko <\/em>album in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>He said the album is called <em>Masauko <\/em>because it is dedicated \u201cto my father\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The singer and song writer, whose primary instruments are the acoustic guitar and the voice, recorded his 12-track album under his label Come to Life Music.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThis is my third album since I made two with BLK Sonshine but it is my first solo album,\u201d<\/em> Masauko said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The album saw him working with fellow artists Ernest Ikwanga, who is now based in Switzerland, Sam Mjura Mkandawire, Chambota Chirwa and Kyle Lucy Phikiso.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Sam Banda Jnr: Us-based jazz musician Masauko Chipembere Jr is set to perform at the Sounds of Malawi Acoustic Session at Jacaranda Cultural Centre (JCC) in Blantyre.
