{"id":81185,"date":"2019-07-30T10:49:53","date_gmt":"2019-07-30T08:49:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=81185"},"modified":"2019-07-30T10:49:53","modified_gmt":"2019-07-30T08:49:53","slug":"fire-guts-down-part-of-mzuzu-market","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2019\/07\/30\/fire-guts-down-part-of-mzuzu-market\/","title":{"rendered":"Fire guts down part of Mzuzu market"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Patience Lunda:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fire has gutted down a section of Mzuzu Market during the wee hours of Monday.<\/p>\n<p>An eye witness said he suspected that an electrical fault started the fire in the market.<\/p>\n<p>Valiwess Phiri, a gateman at the market, said he saw sparks on one of the electricity poles after power was restored following load shedding that affected the whole city on Sunday.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cI noticed some sparks of fire on one of the electricity poles inside the market when I was doing my inspection. I called fellow guards who called the Mzuzu City Council fire brigade who put out the fire after some minutes,\u201d<\/em> he said<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The market\u2019s crafts centre chairperson, Bauleni Nkhoma, said the fire destroyed a lot of items, appealing to well-wishers to assist the victims.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cA lot of items have been burnt and this has affected many business people because they depend on their businesses for their day-to-day survival. We would really love people to support us with anything,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Northern Region Deputy Police spokesperson, Maurice Chapola, said they were yet to establish the cause of the fire and assess the damage caused.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWe are still carrying out our investigations to find out the real cause of the fire and the value of the goods burnt during the fire,\u201d<\/em> Chapola said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Some of the items destroyed are sofa sets, sewing machines, shoes, food items and artistry works.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Patience Lunda: Fire has gutted down a section of Mzuzu Market during the wee hours of Monday.
