{"id":80980,"date":"2019-07-24T03:26:57","date_gmt":"2019-07-24T01:26:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=80980"},"modified":"2019-07-24T03:26:57","modified_gmt":"2019-07-24T01:26:57","slug":"culture-blamed-for-child-marriages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2019\/07\/24\/culture-blamed-for-child-marriages\/","title":{"rendered":"Culture blamed for child marriages"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Sharon Chirwa:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of the organisations that champion women and girls\u2019 rights has bemoaned rising cases of early marriage, faulting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.times.mw\/cultural-practices-fuelling-early-marriages\/\">culture<\/a> for fuelling the same.<\/p>\n<p>Women\u2019s Legal Resources Centre (Wolrec) Communications and Research Manager, Dumase Zgambo-Mapemba, said this at a journalists\u2019 workshop on Monday.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWe blame the proliferation of early marriages on culture, especially in communities where issues of lobola [bride price] and dowry take centre stage. [The cases are higher] where people want to benefit from the marriage of the child. The child is seen as a source of income. The support that the husband will be giving the girl\u2019s family is seen as important,\u201d<\/em> Zgambo- Mapemba said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>She said the early marriage prevalence rate in Malawi stood at 42 percent, 5 percentage points higher than the Southern African Development Community rate of 37 percent.<\/p>\n<p>She, however, said the country was making progress.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, lawyer Kumvana Mlumbe has said laws that restrict early marriages are not known by most citizens; hence, the need for journalists to sensitise people to the issues.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Sharon Chirwa: One of the organisations that champion women and girls\u2019 rights has bemoaned rising cases of early marriage, faulting culture for fuelling the same.
